Dance Style Design, LLC started out as a successful and profitable business designing and creating custom dancewear and formalwear. Dance Style Design is a minority-owned, women-owned business led by Cheryl Maloney and Kathleen Laughlin. Together, these dynamic women have combined their many years of experience in business, sewing, design, and sales to fill a need in the domestic Cut and Sew Production workspace.

Cheryl and Kathy worked diligently to grow the industrial production side of the business while continuing with their custom design work. During the beginning of the pandemic, they were able to do this by making masks for local hospitals, clinics, and other essential workers. By collaborating with the Carolina Textile District, DSD has successfully evolved into a cut and sew facility that prides itself on bringing
textile production back to the United States and to the Southeast.

DSD is currently providing design, development, sourcing, patternmaking, consulting as well as cut and
sew production services to our clients. Our key values include worker skills training,
providing livable wages in an industry that has a reputation for underpaid workers, environmental
awareness and resourcefulness. DSD is committed to repurposing cut off fabric or sending it to be locally and responsibly up-cycled into yarn and other fabrics that can be resold.

We look forward to continue creating jobs and providing training in the Charlotte, NC area and eventually to applicants across the country who want to learn industrial textile production.

Founder + CEO

Kathy Laughlin

My name is Cheryl Maloney. In 2018, I started designing and sewing custom ballgowns for myself and dance costumes for local Charlotte dancers. In 2019, my good friend Kathleen Laughlin became my business partner and we formed Dance Style Design, LLC.

Kathy and I found that our combination of business, administrative, sewing, design, pattern making, and dance skills blended beautifully to fill a need in the community. We were able to bring the vision that dancers had in their heads to reality while giving them a perfect fit.  Our business increasingly grew until COVID-19. We had to pivot and do it quickly but in a way that made sense.

That pivot became our lifeblood and has led us to an even more expansive business. We started our transition by making and donating thousands of masks to local essential workers, clinics, and hospitals. Through valuable connections and partnerships, DSD is now a Cut and Sew production company. We are currently working with several clients and companies to produce items such as dresses, bras, masks, pajamas, workout gear, tailored shirts, jackets, pants, blouses, car seat liners, incontinence medical wear and other sewn goods by the thousands. DSD is excited and grateful to have the opportunity to bring more diverse visions to life! We look forward to working with you and guiding you through the cut and sew process.
